Evaluation of sexual dysfunction of foreign medical students

The youth are highly concerned with the physical and sexual attractiveness of themselves and their sexual partners. Hence they are taking unnecessary risks and making decisions about their future without adequately considering the consequences. In addition risky sexual activities (having multiple partners, weaker emotional bound between partners) can harm physical and psychosocial health.
The aim of the present research was to assess the factors influencing sexual health of medical students applying international validated forms.
An anonymus questionnaire was given to foreign medical students in order to assess sexual function and habits. Forms were based on the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) domain questionnaire regarding males and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) regarding females. The effect on sexual score values of age, body shape, age at first menstruation and first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners, number of sexual partners, satisfaction regarding sexual intercourse (among others) were analyzed applying multiparametric linear regression.
Thirty males and thirty females completed the questionnaire on request. Mean age and body mass index (BMI) was 23.36 years (range 19-29) and 24.18 (range 15-39) respectively. Two-third of the males and half of the females had already performed sexual intercourse in their life. Active dating has positive effect on erectile function (p=0.045) and intercourse satisfaction score (p=0.005) according study results. Longer relationship improves sexual desire (p=0.038) and overall satisfaction (p=0.007). Watching pornography and pickups decreases overall satisfaction (p=0.005; p=0.007 respectively). No statistical significant relation was observed among females. Limitation of the study was low number of sexually active persons especially in the female population.
The prevalence of sexual dysfunctions among sexually active young adults is lower. Although there are several sexual habits which has negative effect on satisfaction with sexual life and so self-esteem. Hence this young population requires more attention regarding sexual education in order to prevent late psychosocial complications.
