Gas analysis of testicular blood

Introduction:
Testicular torsion is one of the most common causes of urological emergencies in men, it affects mostly adolescent and neonates. Although 70% of testicular torsion occurs prenatally and 30% occurs postnatally, early diagnosis and treatment are vital in preservation of testicular function and prognosis depends on the degree of torsion and its duration before any intervention. Despite prompt surgical intervention, data suggest that up to 40% of testis cannot be savaged.
Aim:
Our goal is to analyze samples of blood collected from several patients to and determine the normal parameters as this will help us answer the question if there are any early changes in certain parameters in the early phase of testicular torsion.
Method:
Blood samples were collected from the testicles of 10 patients during Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE) procedure with the aid of capillary. Blood samples were analyzed immediately with the aid of a Mass spectrometer and all the necessary blood gas parameters were recorded and compared to reference range of normal peripheral arterial blood.
Results:
The age range of the participants was between 22 years and 40 years and the mean age was 35years. Mean values of the assessed parameters (pH, pCO2, pO2, cHCO3-, sO2 and testicular volume on right and left side) were the followings 7.4; 44.3; 118; 28.6; 97.6%; 7.9 cm3 and 7.3cm3, respectively.
Conclusion:
The parameters of normal testicular blood do not differ from peripheral arterial blood. This can be applied after further studies to determine survival perspective of testicles after torsion.
